Fenland Landscape Against Turbines

PRESS RELEASE 9th MAY 2007

Firstly we are obviously very pleased with the election of the Independent Candidate,  David Markinson as our Borough Councillor.  David has been consistent in his opposition against the wind turbine power station development and the fact that he defeated the standing candidate by such a high margin clearly demonstrates the strong local opposition to this project.

We are also very pleased to note that a number of the consortium members have now pulled out of the development and will not therefore allow the wind turbines to be built on their land (see front page of the EDP dated 9th May).  It is pleasing to see that not only the majority of the local community but now even consortium members are rejecting the project.  We note with interest that the remaining members of the consortium say that the proposal will now have to be scaled down.  However we have no confirmation of what “scaled down” actually means and we would caution people not be lulled into a sense of false security.  Even if the plan ends up smaller that originally proposed, if planning permission is granted it will set a precedence and we are likely to find them springing up everywhere!

We have also noticed this morning (Wednesday the 9th of May) that the mast measuring wind speeds is no longer standing.  We do not know why it has been taken down but it does not seem to have been standing long enough for the necessary data to have yet been recorded!

FLAT will be holding another public meeting at 7PM on the 18th of May 2007 at Tilney St Lawrence village hall.  This will be an opportunity for all of those who attended our last meeting at Marshland Jubilee Hall to be updated on developments and find out how they can be actively involved in opposing the plans.  For those who did not attend our last meeting, this will be their chance to find out what an adverse impact this wind power station could have on them both personally and their local community and landscape.
